How to measure windows for curtains and blinds
A simple guide to measuring windows for made-to-measure curtains and blinds: track width, drop, inside and outside mounts.
You need a steel tape, a step stool and ten minutes per window. Measure in centimetres and write down every number.
Curtains
- Track width: window width plus 15–25 cm on each side, so the curtains stack clear of the glass when open.
- Track height: 10–15 cm above the window frame, or close to the ceiling to make the room feel taller.
- Drop: from the track to 1 cm above the floor for a clean finish, or 5–10 cm longer for a puddle.
Blinds
- Inside mount: measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the recess and use the smallest.
- Outside mount: add 5–10 cm on each side of the frame to block light at the edges.
- Check for handles and window cranks that a blind would hit.
