How to clean and care for brass decor
How to clean brass vases, diyas and lamps at home with lemon, salt or pitambari, and when to let brass age naturally.
Brass darkens as it meets air and hands. Some people love the soft patina; others want the shine back. Both are fine.
Everyday care
- Dust with a dry, soft cloth.
- Wipe off water marks and dry pieces fully after use.
- Keep brass away from damp walls and bathrooms.
Restoring the shine
- Lemon and salt: rub half a lemon dipped in salt over the surface, rinse and dry immediately.
- Pitambari powder: the traditional Indian brass cleaner, made into a paste with water.
- Tamarind pulp works well on diyas and pooja items with oil residue.
Lacquered brass
Some pieces, like our hammered planters, are lacquered to slow tarnish. Do not scrub them; a damp cloth is enough.
